An Epidemiological Study on the Short Term Complication for Vasectomy

Abstract
Vasectomy can be one of the simplest, cheapest, and most satisfactory methods of fertility control.

Surgical intervention to occlude the vas deferens and thus prevent the ejaculation of¢¥ spermatozoa has been practiced nationwidely since 1962 in Korea.

The techniques used today in vasectomy are tying the ends or fulgurating the ends by electrocautery.

t Whatever the method employed, the complication rate for vasectomy is very low compared` with other contraceptive methods.

The common side effects are local problems like skin discoloration, bruising, swelling, and-discomfort. These usually disappear in a few days after the operation.
r
Sometimes a little more serious conditions may develop such as epididymitis, hematoma,. scrotal abscess, but many of these can usually be handled without surgical intervention.
A total of 272,434 cases of vasectomy which were performed during 6 years from 1978 to 1983 in Korea by the Governmental Plan were evaluated epidemiologically in terms of short term complication study. The results were as follows:
r 1. Out of 272,434 cases, 302 complications were reported and the main complications were epididymitis, hematoma, scrotal abscess, sperm granuloma, vasitis, recanalization, psychological. problems, vasocutaneous fistula, wound infection, and wound disruption (Table 1).
2. The most frequent complication encountered was epididymitis (Table 1).
3. The percentage of complicated cases was 0.11(Table 1).

4. The higher the educational level, the less the number of complicated cases is noted (Table 3).

5. Most complications occurred within.one year after operation(Table 5).
